Overview
The Lead Piping Designer is responsible for overseeing the piping scope of work on a project, directing a team of drafters and designers to complete a project using either 2D or 3D modeling software, Navisworks and Microsoft Products. Checks deliverable documents as defined in project scope of work that may include equipment general arrangement drawings, piping orthographics and isometrics, line and tie-in lists and material take-offs. Runs internal and external reviews for the project. Will provide guidance to the interns, drafters and more junior designers. Provides input into the scope, schedule and budget for the project and provides continuous input through the life of the project to the project management team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as project lead on multi- and single-discipline projects and direct piping designers/drafters assigned to those projects.
- Will oversee area leads (Senior Piping Designers) on large scale projects.
- Provide weekly scope/budget/schedule updates to the project manager and department manager.
- Initiate change order requests and provide impact to scope/budget/schedule to project manager and department manager.
- Assist with development of proposals including scope, budget and schedule.
- Direct and/or coordinate work to be done in the field including locating tie-ins, field sketches, taking measurements and pictures.
- Use Plant 3D software to model and locate equipment and route pipe.
- Provide sketches or verbal instruction to younger designers to do the same.
- Direct and/or coordinate layout work with piping design team. This includes holding meetings to discuss scope, procedures, specs, standards, schedules, etc. as needed throughout the life of the project.
- Work with engineering group to determine systems to be stress analyzed and incorporate needed flexibility and supports into the layout.
- Design and detail non-standard pipe supports that do not fall under the scope of the structural department.
- Coordinate development of project deliverables as defined in the summary section above.
- Prepare deliverable package for checking, coordinating with the assigned checker.
- Work with engineers to understand code issues regarding layout, valving, etc. and provide this information to the design team.
- Mentor younger designers teaching principals of equipment layout and pipe routings.
- Perform inter-discipline checks of documents produced by other departments for the project.
- Provide feedback on equipment vendor drawings such as nozzle locations, sizes and ratings.
- Check design documents for another project, or area on current project in which you had no design involvement.
- Promotes use of and participates in the development of company design and production standards.
- Reviews drawings and documents to assure accuracy and compliance with company design and production standards, also known as the QA/QC process.
- Provide in-house RFI support during the design phase and during construction as needed.
- Coordinate with BIM team to set up projects in 3D modeling environment.
- Will participate in project meetings either in-house or at client’s site.
Minimum Qualifications
- Preferred associates degree or certificate in mechanical related field from an accredited technical institution or college.
- ​Minimum 15 years of experience in piping design.
- Must be able to layout piping systems and locate equipment with no assistance.
- Must be able to layout a pipe rack as well as a skid/module.
- Must be able to interpret stress reports and apply proper support and pipe routing based on these, as well as know when to work with the engineer in cases that are difficult to support.
- Must be comfortable speaking with project managers and the client and must be confident in presenting and discussing the project with them.
- Proficient use of Navisworks and ability to use Navisworks for client reviews.
